چکیده
The systematic mapping of obscured and optically invisible galaxies behind the Milky Way through complementary surveys are important in arriving at the whole-sky distribution of complete galaxy samples and therewith for our understanding of the dynamics in the local Universe. In this paper, a status report is given of the various deep optical , near infrared (NIR), and systematic blind H I-surveys in the Zone of Avoidance, including a discussion on the limitations and selection effects inherent to the different multi-wavelength surveys and first results.

Recent surveys suggest that most or all normal galaxies host a massive black hole with 1/100 to 1/1000 of the visible mass of the spheroid of the galaxy. Various lines of argument suggest that these galaxies have merged at least once in our past lightcone, and that the black holes have also merged. This leads to a merger rate of massive black holes of about 1/yrs.

In this article we review the current status of the stellar population assignment for novae. Observations in the Milky Way and in external galaxies point out the existence of two nova populations: fast and bright novae, mainly originated from massive white dwarfs and associated with the thin disk/spiral arm stellar population, and slow and faint novae, originated from lighter white dwarfs and a...

In the course of the comprehensive CFRS redshift survey to I AB = 22.5 (see Lilly et al, these proceedings) with the CFHT MOS/SIS spectrograph, we have observed ∼25 field galaxies with z > 1. However, it is clear that almost an equal number, predominantly red galaxies, have likely been missed largely because of limitations in the observed wavelength range. The properties of the observed galaxie...

Gravitational lensing can be used to analyze the redshift distribution of faint galaxies. In particular the magnification bias modifies locally the galaxy number density of lensed sources observed in lensing clusters. This depletion area probes the redshift distribution of galaxies beyond B = 25. In this proceedings I present this new tool to infer the redhsift distribution of faint galaxies.
